G/D Thyself: Spirit Strategy on Raising Free Black Children

Lauri Faggioni

Expanding on their short film AS TOLD TO G/D THYSELF, Lauri collaborated with the Ummah Chroma collective (Bradford Young, Terence Nance, Jenn Nkiru, Kamasi Washington, Marc Thomas) to design and build a year-long exhibition at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, in partnership with International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

“The installation is a ritual space-making exercise that extends the film’s meditations on raising free Black children,” says Ummah Chroma. “It draws on diverse cultural traditions and invites spiritual practice, teaching, and reclamation.”

The space serves as a site for personal and collective rituals, encouraging exploration of spirituality, metaphysical transcendence, and self-expression. Over the course of the exhibition, local and international artists contributed performances, writings, and ceremonies, continuously evolving the installation.
